Case Study: Temporary Connectivity at Myriad Computer Services

The Problem:
The successful and rapidly expanding company had committed to a move to more spacious
offices in a nearby location, and in addition to moving human resources and office
furniture, provision for computer connectivity had to be made.
The company had a large legacy document-retrieval system with records of some 54,000
contractors and consultants, which required conversion over a predicted 6-9 month period
to a more modern Windows-based Year-2000-compliant system. With several subsidiary offices
in the UK connected by leased-line ISDN services, the obvious choice was to leave the old
system in-situ, install the new system in the new building to run in parallel and allow
transfer of the full database and other hardware - but how could the building-to-building
connectivity be provided?
Given the requirement to bridge the systems using a common 10Mbps
Ethernet backbone, the traditional choices of using converters to a 2Mbps leased-line
'Megastream' service would have been expensive, requiring a minimum 1 year contract and
could have upset system performance due to reduced data throughput; the alternative of a
custom fixed-cabling solution was not feasible due to lack of access caused by site layout
and land ownership issues.
The Solution:
For Myriad, a CableFree Solution proved the perfect choice, providing a highly-reliable
line-of-sight connection with no interference, licensing or bandwidth limitations with a
single day to install, offering conventional RJ45 cable connection to the Ethernet hubs.
An extensible leasing package was offered, proving significantly more cost-effective than
traditional options, some of which would have also provided inferior performance .
