FSO Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
SNMP
What is Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)? What does it consist
of?
SNMP systems consist of Managers (clients) and Agents (servers)
There are three basic operations:
1. Manager Gets data from Agent (sometimes through a Proxy)
2. Manager Sets data on Agent
3. Agent sends Traps to Manager
A SNMP browser is a software application displays SNMP data, traps, and
all remote agent information in an easy-to-view format. In order for the
SNMP browser to work, MIB files must be loaded and compiled into the
browser. Once the MIBs are loaded the known data formats are used to
display the information.
MIBs describe the information on an agent visible to a manager, as well as
the traps that the agent can generate
Inside the agents, data objects are referenced by OIDs. MIBs map
human-readable names to these objects and apply a hierarchical structure.
There are many browsers in general use such as MG-SOFT, SNMPC for Windows
based systems and UCD for LINUX. Browsers can be reasonably simple, such
as MG SOft or can be very complex and powerful such as HPOpenView.
Not all applications require SNMP. For enterprise users, it is common to
use more cost-effective, proprietary management systems available on some
FSO products.
